The Spanish Conquest

13 August 2010,

The Restaurant La Terraza del Casino in Madrid, Spain dresses a spectacular new look as Jamie Hayon explores the balance of an aesthetic link between past and future using his very personal style.

Casino de Madrid is one of the Spanish capital’s most traditional member’s clubs, housed in an august building with musty neo-Gothic library, sweeping staircases, painted vaulted ceilings and heavy-lidded patrons who look like they haven’t stirred from their well-worn sofas since the institution was founded in 1836. On the top floor, however, in the recently reopened La Terraza del Casino restaurant, the atmosphere is somewhat different.

Rickety elevator doors open to reveal an airy space lined with a wall of beveled mirrors. The floor shimmers with large black and white checks and oddly shaped Romanesque columns. There are vases with gold polka dots, oversize baroque chandeliers, doors with jewel shaped insets and imperiously mismatched chairs. Hand painted plates is affixed to the ceiling of a private dining room and deer-head planters decorate the ultramodern bathrooms. It is quite obvious that one of the most talked about up-and-comers in the design world is responsible for the classy mayhem. Jaime Hayon had added his personal pop influenced avant-garde theme to the eatery and proves to the world that he has many more tricks tucked away impatiently up his sleeve.
