Shanghai:Monumental Cityscape Of Shanghai
Located at the prestigious cultural heritage shanghai xintiandi, the interior design of the xiao nan guo restaurant celebrates the historical architecture in a modern expression.
The restaurant design reflects the monumental cityscape of Shanghai, which is a wonderful mix of old and new, east and west. It maintains this unique quality and spirit by preserving the existing architectural form and all the delicate detailing, such as the brick wall, the circular-pattern window frame as well as other old fabrics of the original structure, leaving a succinct and clean backdrop in contrast to the old accents.

Taking inspiration from the Chinese garden, classic Chinese garden elements are applied in its interior to express the natural rhythm and so link difference spaces within the restaurant. With Chinese traditional paper-cut patterned window grille acting as walls, a transparency linking space is made possible. It blurs the territories of the outside and inside by the collaboration of reflection of mirrors and penetration of sunbeam, and thereby presenting the charm of nature through the interplay of light and shadow.
Adding to the richness of the space is an inverted pavilion concept with ceiling lights simulating the pavilion skylight, tree pattern planted on the carpet and fish pond graphics embedded on the tables, this joyful environment not only echoes to the historical architecture but also creates an agreeable brightness and transparency that makes people feel like dining in an outdoor space.
