Served With Zest

1 March 2011,

My Cookbook is a new trendy modern Malaysian restaurant that sets to redefine the Malaysian food culture.

There’s a new kid joining the already busy strip on Sunway Giza – and prepare yourselves to be pleasantly surprised as it definitely be far from the norm. My Cookbook stands like the brightest constellation amongst the stars, the logo calls out to many with its striking pink, and the patio furniture is like no other on the premise. That’s because most of the furniture used at My Cookbook are designer pieces, hence the quality in seen depicted by its minimalist style.

There are three floors to explore in My Cookbook; the first floor consists of a patio where smokers can enjoy meals shaded by a large umbrella that has already been angled to block out the harsh sun that may stream in. The interior is both refreshing and girly; the principal colour used is a pristine white on the walls, floor, and cushion counter seats including a long curtain that can be seen hanging from the second floor. To break the monotony, a very commanding shade of bright pink was used on the loose pieces of chairs. But perhaps the conversation starter is the large artwork of cooking utensils used to create an artwork against a large blank wall instead of being back in the kitchen.

The second floor of My Cookbook offers its patrons a more intimate feel, but definitely not lacking in style. Parties up to 30 people can lounge in the sleek post-Victorian styled like chairs and feel like celebrities, shielded from the hubbub downstairs by a sheer curtain. From the charming hanging ceilings lights to the classy textured wallpaper, everything has been designed to make a dining experience a stylish one indeed. Up one more flight of stairs and we arrive at the highest floor of My Cookbook. It would be perfect to book the entire floor and host your very own birthday party / hen’s night / company’s anniversary party (just like we did!) It comfortably caters to a large group of up to 60 people because of its sweeping spaciousness. With furniture, the floor seems like a cafeteria of a Beverly Hills Private school, and without it, the space could be turned into a dance floor especially since the 3rd floor comes equipped with three projectors and a screen.

While the interior has already made you feel like a celebrity, the concept of the food served is definitely thought way outside the box. They sure seem to love their eggs; one of the dishes is the Smoked Omega Eggs with Fish Roe and Shimeji Mushrooms. Similar to the eggs often served with Japanese ramen, pop the whole spoonful of half an egg into your mouth and its soft gooey texture slides down the throat just like fresh oysters. The Black-Eyed Pea Cake with Salted Egg Yolk and Chili reminded me of the ones sold at morning markets, but richer in taste and prettier in presentation. The signature dish is perhaps the MY Crispy Chicken Roll and Fragrant Rice served with Double Boiled Chicken Broth, where both chicken and rice has been moulded into cylinder shapes and then cut. So instead of the conventional plate filled with a mountain of rice and boned-chicken, the dish is readily bite sized that is bursting with flavor. Where else can one find contemporary Chinese fare served fashionably in a swanky venue?
