Eugenie Chan:Sparkle Of A Gem

She firmly states that she is not a big fan of furniture. if she had it her way, she’d have a living room laden with bean bags, pillows and rugs. and because of her vibrant personality, no corner would be the same style as why stick to one at all? regardless, eugenie chan makes us feel very welcome in a home she grew up in, a home that nurtured her creative being.

Eugenie Chan is a spice jar full of surprises. If you think you will be able to fit her into a certain personality group, don’t, as Eugenie indeed is a box full of erratic surprises. At the just-right age of 21, while enjoying her overseas experience in Australia, she stumbled across a bead store. Though she has always been overwhelmed by the numerous assortments of texture, colors and material, it seemed that this journey was already written in the stars for her. After a friendly approach by the salesgirl, a demonstration to earring making soon became a blooming interest. Like any other girl taken in by the sparkly pretty shiny things, she soon learnt all she could at a friend’s shop in Brisbane.

Already having the skills at handicraft since a young age, it wasn’t long before Eugenie decided to begin her little jewellery making project. A dream job indeed as travels to Bangkok and Hong Kong set in stone her decision to launch her own jewellery line. Made only from Silver and Semi precious stones, Eugenie believes that her pieces should be unique and of quality. One can never find two pieces of the exact same design as these versatile little beauties are all made by hand, from scratch, by one and one person only. Up to date, there are more than 100 pieces of Eugenie’s jewellery marking their existence around town. Tucked away on a little hill in Jalan Gasing is where Eugenie resides with her parents. Spanning over 6 rooms and 3 bathrooms, you know you’re there when you see a curious furry grey face poking out the front grill. Eugenie and the resident cat Misty takes us on a tour of the contemporary yet Oriental home.

Designed and decorated by Eugenie’s mom, you can find various oriental and antique pieces scattered strategically around the house. Each area possesses a strong character with no nook or cranny left untouched. Far from looking cluttered, the wide space manages to exude a feeling of truly being at home. The favourite family spot, funnily enough, is not the living room. Hiding a little out sight is the study room.

“You’ll find my dad here on this computer, my mom on the other one, and I’ll be in the middle of them both, working our projects. My brother would be lounging in front of the television playing his PS3. And somehow, it just transformed into a room where we would all just hang out and spend time together.”

These days you can find her buzzing about town as the Creative Director for Miss Universe Malaysia 2010. The lanky beauties already well on their way to compete for the esteemed title to represent Malaysia, find out more on the official website www.2010.missuniversemalaysia.com.my.
