Unveiling the life of a Rockstar

9 July 2010,

Everybody thinks that to live like a rockstar you would have to add in the equation of ‘sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll’. But think again and think hard.

Some people do not know what they want, some people are left profound by the choices fed to them, and some people leave it up to faith. Basil Joseph, who is a radio DJ and recently he was the emcee for the MTV World Stage 2010 in Malaysia; prior to his love for the entertainment industry he studied to be a pilot; within the industry he is portrayed to be a laidback and influential person in the Malaysian Independent music industry. Both Basil and Sindica De Silva, left it to faith and faith indeed unveiled itself.

Interviewing him was like watching Marty the zebra by Chris Rock in Madagascar – minus the stripes and the hoofs.

The story began, when a man failed to make purchase of this abode, due to unanticipated reasons the purchase was void and it was “a blessing in disguise”. However, not every beginning starts with a happily every after, “it was in a very terrible condition. The room was pink in colour, it had a heart shaped light in it and it looked like a brothel”. Rather than embracing a home which is fit for human habitation, their home was “like a war zone, there were holes everywhere. It was like an exhibition of holes”.

For a span of three months, the two took on the task of a painter. You would think that they have gotten some professional advises before they took on this challenge to refurbish their home, but they didn’t. These two are very taken by the sights during their visit to the islands for their diving trip, plus “around our apartment there are a lot of trees and then there will be a hill, it is very green. We like the concept where there is a lot of wood.. I wouldn’t say mellow but very cozy and homely and hopefully there is an island feel.” Therefore the living space is adorned in sunset yellow and the furnishings are collected from all across the globe. And the contrasts in colours between walls are “to create the illusion for the space to look bigger”.

The storage area for these lovebirds is considered to be both memorable and important. It did not derive from the depravation to scribble on walls but it was “when Sindi and I first met, we were getting to know each another and we decided to take a trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia. There was this bar which was called ‘Angkor-What’…the walls of this place is painted with simple tones but people from all over the world left their markings on the wall. You can see that it was from three years ago, these Japanese people said this.” Thus, came about this idea for the space.

For a man that would throw everything out of the house except his “dining table” – that certainly says a lot of thing about him. Not cause he is an ‘Anthony Bourdain’ the infamous food writer, chef and traveller, in the making but “because I use the table for my computer and also to entertain my friends, there are a lot of good memories there”.
