Will Quah – Defining Sui Generis

17 June 2010,

Daring to be bold, yet depicting personality into the design and layout. It is an inspiringly impressive home, only because the homeowner has the natural flair to impress those around him with his charm. Take a walk with us – You’ll see what we mean.

Most mothers wish their daughters would meet a man who is cheekily handsome, polite, has a resume of well paying jobs and is a charming gentleman. Most mothers wish their daughters would date somebody like Will Quah. I know my mother does. Already a familiar face and voice in the Malaysian entertainment scene for over 8 years, the strong opinioned lad has created magic in front of the camera from music chart shows on Channel V to being Malaysia’s youngest news anchor on ntv7 and most recently the witty face on The Breakfast Show. With such a recognizable voice, (often more than once has he been compared to 80’s British pop star Rick Astley) he joined RedFM as the youngest breakfast show host in the country, and one of the only Deejays to debut in the prime time slot, making big waves throughout the industry with his dark sarcasm, odd points of view, and resonant voice. In between finding time to host events, be on television commercials, contributing freelance for magazines and emceeing, Will has so graciously invited us into his stunning home and allowed us a peek into the life of Will Quah.

“A lot of people say don’t rush into the renovation, just do what you need to first and settle the rest after you move in. That’s not true! If you don’t complete all the works before you move in, you’ll just be faced with plenty of hassle from construction dust on your things; careless paint drops on the floor, in short a massive headache!”

Nestled behind Klang Valley’s bustling Changkat Bukit Bintang, Will’s apartment on the 19th floor is his blood, sweat and tears. His home for the past four years, Will did all the interior designing on his own – having already dreamed of how the overall look was going to be.

So Will took his time and spent 7 months shopping for furniture, handpicking building materials, micromanaging the contractors and making a mock cut out of the apartment’s layout with paper and blue tack so that everything is measured in precise detail. The result – a home sweet home vision materialized into reality.

“The red walls and black tiles were something I’ve wanted for a very LONG time, bold striking colors in the living room to make a real statement. Some of my friends even retorted that it’ll end up looking like a Tai Thong restaurant! And my contractor insisted that it’ll never work. But when the paint went on the walls and the tiles were fixed it, everyone had to admit that it looked really nice – even more so as the furniture and doors matched perfectly,”

The living room showcases the very essence of Will, on display are shelves overflowing with books of all genres and memorabilia from his favorite movies – most obvious are Lord of The Rings geographical maps that adorns the walls. The style is bold and dramatic, a mirror of the homeowner, an easy and strong mixture of Oriental meets Western.

“I spend the most time in the workshop room; it’s a mess but it depicts most of my character and personality more than any other room. It’s great because it’s tucked away at the back of the apartment– it’s my inner sanctum.”

NEAT TIPS

• Make sure your contractors and painters know how to paint red walls. As any sort of bold striking colors such as red are not very thick colors, you need to paint on a darker shade first such as a gray or terracotta base coat before slapping on the red. After that the red will go over it much more easily and you’ll get the richness out of that vibrant color. You’ll also avoid the streaky finishing this way.

• Check everything before you sign off your contractors! You don’t want to be left with light switches that don’t work, phone lines that aren’t connected and power points that are dead. Especially when wiring is concerned as it will be a major hassle having to rewire after you’ve painted your walls. People will cut corners if you don’t monitor them properly.

• There is no such thing as too many power points. The more on each wall the better because each time you switch your furniture around, there will always be available power points on the other walls. I’m living with at least 20 power points in each room and its done nothing but wonders and convenience.

• If you can afford it, renovate your new place before moving in. It will be a hassle to have part of your renovation done before and then after moving in as there’s the matters of dust from construction, paint drops and things going missing to deal with. It’s definitely easier and more flexible to have all the renovation work done and then move it.
