Art and creativity have become an important part of contemporary living and culture. In most instances, the desire for sense of style and individuality begins at home. Therefore choosing art as an element to complement our home décor is nothing new. But selecting the right work of art for your home requires some guidance.

A work of art, when selected properly, can make your home livelier and engage the spectators in a memorable way like putting the final icing on the cake. Here is a simple guide to choosing art for your home:

01. MATCH THE INTERIOR DESIGN
The interior of your house is probably based on your favourite style, so it will not be wrong to choose artworks that match that style. For example, if your house is of contemporary modern design, hanging an abstract artwork would work better than a watercolour landscape of a garden. If the design is tropical, perhaps artworks that depict floral and nature would be an excellent choice.

02. MATCH THE COLOURS
This rule of thumb could also help you decide more easily
– go with the the colours in the room. Select artworks that either contain or match the colours on walls, main furniture in the room, pillows and so on. Imagine this setting of a bedroom – white colour walls, green colour bedsheet and yellow colour pillows. In this situation, we think an artwork that matches the colour of the pillows would look good. 03. BE BOLD, BE CONTRASTING
Putting up a piece of artwork in a contrasting colour can be exciting too! Jazz up your black-and-white living room with artworks that contain bright colours such as bold blue, rich purple, playful green or vibrant red to give it a feel of youth and enthusiasm.

04. ROLE AND SIZE
Create a centrepiece where possible, for example: a painting centered over a sofa or bed. However, be mindful of the size limits imposed by space so the artwork will fit in the surroundings and not overwhelm the rest of the interior design. When the room has many large, ornate furniture pieces, go for smaller pieces of art.
