Melvin Sia’s Gemini Home

As the only child in his family, Melvin Sia has adapted to being comfortable el solo. Perhaps it’s the relationship sia has with his birth sign – the extroverted gemini – that allows him the versatility in personality: being able to shift from a jokester to the ever-serious personality behind lens. And when it comes to home design, Melvin has a different perception entirely.

What feeling does a home give you?
Home, to me, is a place of rest – somewhere I can find back myself. In a sense, my home is my refuge; perhaps better put is a sharing space where I can thoroughly let my emotions run free. I think the atmosphere of a home is extremely important. It must be calming and peaceful. I also wouldn’t drink with friends at home during gatherings.

Who are you currently living with?
Currently, I’m living alone in my apartment. Ten years ago, I was just renting. But then gradually, I fell in love with the place and decided to buy it – following was renovation, installing a Jacuzzi, etc. So now, this is home. I also bought a house and designed it myself. The master bedroom is separate from the rest of the other rooms, so if guests are staying, they won’t hinder my personal space.

What is your style like for home design?
I like modern homes – all white, light tones, simple, spacious. Windows must be multi-functional, allowing a heap of natural lights to flow in. Because I value my personal space, I prefer all my rooms to be separate. I have a complete kitchen with all necessary appliances. Although I don’t really use the kitchen, it’s important that it’s full … simply because it’s part of a ‘home’.

The bathroom must also have a Jacuzzi, so I can relax quietly after a long day. The shower’s ceiling should have some sort of theme, so it gives the illusion of being rained on. Maybe some dark lines and gray shades! A comfortable and big bed would suffice. And, in addition, I would like my own walk-in closet for all my clothes and shoes.

Where’s the most comfortable place in the house?
I think it’s the bathroom. I like thinking during bath time. When I was a child, I used to hide there and read. I feel like it’s the one place no one will disturb me. Aside from the bathroom, I like my bedroom, where I can watch T.V., go online or simply sleep. Sometimes, though, if I’ve not showered by the time I reach home, I’d stay in the living room and just relax.

What do you usually do when you’re home?
I do enough while I’m out. When I’m home, I want to do nothing. I like lazy afternoons listening to music, watching movies, browsing the web, etc. It’s like a mini-vacation at home. I’m usually so charged and ready-to-go, I have to refuel before I make a new start.

Do you have the habit of cooking?
No! Home is really a place where I rest. I really don’t do anything. Sometimes, when I’m really lazy, I’ll make instant noodles. I belong to the group of people that don’t like to eat, like back in the school days. Every now and then, I’ll cook up something easy and have friends over. But lately, it’s been my friends cooking and me going over to chow.

Is your current home’s design your ideal dream house?
Actually, not entirely! Maybe it’s because I’m an all-around Gemini, or maybe just a deep-sated fantasy. I’d like to integrate my home with nature – like the door to my bathroom is an access to trees, or something. However, I think this type of design is illegal in Malaysia. People might think I’m voyeuristic. Haha!

What’s your dream role?
A psycho! I’d really love to take a jab at being someone crazy, perverted, perhaps a murderer – extreme roles; roles with unsuspecting plots. The roles I play now are just too mediocre; however, I do love playing the good guy – the sense of justice in being good is great. But sometimes, it just makes me tired.

Do you have any expectation for the upcoming award show?
I’ve already received awards, so I have no expectation. I hope to make room for new artists. However, it’ll be an honor to be nominated. It’s a positive feedback.
