A Starlet In The Making

Creative Home gets the scoop of what goes on in the life of up and rising songstress Athena Beh – dreams and aspirations.

Songstress Athena Beh first emerged into the scene after bagging the 1st Runner-up in 1999’s ASTRO Talent Quest and her battle performance on Taiwan’s popular singing competition One Million Star and had instantly become a sweetheart to the Chinese community within the country. Having busied herself the whole year around with her singing career, we managed to catch her for a quick chat about home, family and her aspirations.

How has it been like being away from home?
It’s been quite tough as my family is in Bukit Mertajam, my family’s home has always been my haven, so you can imagine I do get home-sick quite often.

Tell us a little about your family home.
It’s a large shophouse with a history of more than 30 years, it’s seen me since the day I was born, and I don’t think we would move any time soon either. My sister is very artistic so the interior and furnishing is all from her ideas and creativity. She likes to keep things fresh and is constantly bustling around the house rearranging furniture and designs. My mother, she complains so! But that doesn’t deter my dear sister. Like this recent Chinese New Year for example, she decorated the house beautifully with simple ornaments as my mother doesn’t fancy the overly festive accessories.

Which part of the home is everyone’s favourite?
It has to be the living room. Even when I was a little girl I had a habit of taking naps in the living room couch; aren’t naps just the best? I love my naps, that and being with my family in the living room, just chatting and watching television. It’s the best place to spend time with them.

What about cooking?
Growing up, I’ve helped my mother in a kitchen a couple of times but I do have a culinary talent that is self taught! I have a knack for following the recipes in cookbooks quite well; up to date I’ve cooked up some delicious sushi, pizza and some other easy dishes.

How do you relieve stress?
This is going to sound weird, but I have this cute little dog toy that I carry around and talk to when I’m stressed. It work’s for me!


Any plans to buy your own house?
Definitely. I want to own my own double storey house before 35, which will also house my recording studio. I’ve always dreamed of a house that is simple yet modern. What’s important is a comfortable living room sofa, a large bed as I do love to sleep, a large wardrobe space for my clothes and shoes and definitely a bathtub in my bathroom! I prefer baths to showers as soaking in a tub can wash all my stress away. Besides that, I often dream of a kitchen that is simple yet stylish; nothing too complicated instead a sleek easy to use design. Built in appliances are a must as it saves space and is convenient. As long as I have my dream kitchen, I think I shall be cooking a whole lot more often then!

What are your wishes for the year 2011?
I do hope that I will be given more opportunities to perform this year. Besides that I hope to give acting a try this year. There may be a trip to China where I have plans to improve my skills!
