GDY Design & Construction Sdn. Bhd. was established in the year 2008 and has been in this industry since 2002. The company has amassed a large portfolio of completed projects ranging from condominium renovation up to commercial projects. They also offer residential and commercial clients top quality services which includes interior design, space planning, renovation, furniture planning, electrical and plumbing work and custom carpentry work.

How and why did you come about getting involved with interior designing?
I graduated from Architecture and have been practicing it for 2 years, at the same time was freelancing in I.D. Then realized that I am more interested in I.D. as I prefer the fine detailing when it comes to a design rather than the structural designs of architecture. The end results you see from an interior design is also much faster compared to architectural.

After 5 years of being in the design industry, what are the main changes you’ve seen?
The lifestyle that people lead now has definitely changed as we are all more exposed to various designs in television, showrooms and magazines from all around the world. People nowadays are more educated on the matter. In my opinion, interior designing has a lot of potential and can reach higher states of creativity.

What style does GDY dabble in?
Definitely modern. We have done a lot of designs in modern oriental, modern tropical – always a touch of modern fusion with another style. Although the classic style is not our strength, if a client requests for it, I will let them know that though it’s not my strength, I am indeed willing to try. Most importantly, I have to let them know. An honest relationship with my clients is crucial.

What is your definition of success?
Success is when my clients tell me that they like my designs, as the reason I am in this industry is because I am doing what I love, thus being appreciated for it makes me very happy. Contrary to popular belief, making money is important but it’s not the main reason. There is always room for exploration and improvement.

What are your branding and marketing strategies?
Our Company’s reputation has always traveled by word of mouth, so much so that I even get clients in Sarawak! We’ve had exhibitions in HOMEDEC, also had our projects featured in In Design, which proves to be fruitful as we’ve had potential clients call us after reading the magazine. We’ve had 10 projects last year ranging from small scaled to large projects.
