More To MIFF
4 March 2011,

MIFF is more than furniture fair. A gathering platform for industry players, it opens the door for learning and improvement of the industry.
Dato’ Dr. Tan Chin Huat believes in the power of exhibition. Through the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF), he creates a platform for local and international furniture players to gather, interact and subsequently lead to business opportunities for both sides. Thus, it is safe to say that MIFF helps path the way for local furniture players to establish their presences in the international market.
Behind Every Successful Person
Since the establishment of MIFF in 1995, it has grown tremendously and is now one of the top ten furniture fair in the world. Yet, Dato’ Tan is not willing to take all the credits, contributing the success to his team and the supports from the furniture industry. He pointed out, “If you look at a successful singer or actor, you don’t see the people working behind the scene. But it is a fact that behind every successful person or business, there will always be a great team working behind the scene.”
The Issue of Space
For MIFF 2011, an estimated number of 500 exhibitors from 12 countries and more than 6000 visitors are expected. With that kind of figures, it’s no wonder that the exhibition will spread into two venues due to lack of space. MIFF 2011 will be held in Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), bringing the total exhibition space to 80,000sqm. Shuttle buses will be provided at both locations to ferry participants between these two venues.
This type of arrangement is unfortunately not new to the organiser. As the exhibition grew bigger every year, the organiser is faced with the issue of space. “We do not have a suitable exhibition centre that is big enough to cater to the growing number of exhibitors. As you know, furniture is no small item. Exhibitors do require bigger space to display their products,” explained Dato’ Tan.
A Platform for Sharing
For Dato’ Tan, MIFF is more than an exhibition. “In exhibition, we can see and feel the products and learn more about the manufacturing process. It is one of the features that attracted people to go to exhibition,” related Dato’ Tan. This face-to-face communication is an opportunity for knowledge-sharing, which will lead to the improvement of the industry.
When he established MIFF 16 years ago, he wanted to create an export driven platform for local players, toward the goal of making Malaysia the distribution centre in Asia. Looking at how the numbers of participants and visitors increased each year, MIFF has succeeded in fulfilling the goal.
