style="font-weight: normal;">Eric Leong

Eco-Friendly : Q&A

Question : I am intending to change my home concept to be eco friendly. Currently my home interior style minimalist, and unfortunately I am not a fan of the color green. What other colors can I opt for my living room walls?
Actually minimalist is one of the eco friendly interior styles as this style does not utilise a lot of raw material and is also contains very minimal set up thus you are in the right track.
Green is not the official color for eco friendly interior style. You can use neutral color such as white, beige, sky blue and any of the earth tone color for the eco friendly interior style. Especially sky blue since it is the color of the year for 2010. Don’t use too dark color such as dark as dark colored interiors need more light for us to carry on tasks, so remember that maintaining an eco friendly style is reducing energy including lighting.
In order to make your living room looks bigger, apply the feature wall concept whereby you select a wall as the feature wall and paint it a darker tone, leaving the rest of the walls as non feature wall by painting it a neutral color such as beige or off white to create the visual dept for the room.

Question: I recently discovered energy saving light bulbs. Is it recommended that I change all the light bulbs in my home to these eco friendly sorts?
Yes as these are the types of light bulbs that are specially produced to reduce the usage of energy. Just so you know the energy saving bulbs can be found in warm (warm yellow color light) and day light (white color light). And always use warm for ambiance light and white for tasking light such as study room and white kitchen.

INFO
Buy recycled
If your delicate aesthetic sensibilities start at the idea of reusing yogurt or takeout containers to house your plants. It takes less energy to recycle something than to mine virgin materials, so whether you choose recycled copper, plastic, or even rubber to anchor your tender shoots, it’s all eco-smart.
Grow your own food
Buying organic produce can be pricey, so how about harvesting your own seeds? You will be sure to know that your products are free of any harmful pesticides. All that for little more than decoration. It’s time to return to the use of gardens as food sources and it is a definite bang for your buck.

Keep it real
Mother Nature never needed to steal sips from a chemical cocktail of pesticides, weed killers, and chemical fertilizers to keep her act together. Throw out the poisons and layer on some all-natural compost, instead.
Water with care
Adopting a few smart-watering habits will do much to stretch out your supply, especially during dry, hot seasons. Adding mulch and compost to your soil will retain water and cut down evaporation. Plus, soaker hoses or drip irrigation, which only uses 50 percent of the water used by sprinklers.

Harvest rainwater
Adding a rain barrel is an inexpensive and effortless way to capture mineral and chlorine-free water for watering lawns, yards, and gardens, as well as washing cars or rinsing windows. By harnessing what’s literally falling from the sky, you will be more cost efficient, but also a reduction in storm water surplus, which in turn helps prevent erosion and flooding. Place a screen on top of your barrel to keep out insects, debris, and bird missiles, and make frequent use of your water supply to keep it moving and ventilated.

Make compost from kitchen scraps
Compost like a champ by throwing in your vegetable waste, instead of allowing it to be packed off to the landfill. It is known as “gardener’s gold”, compost enriches soil fertility by giving it a shot of high-powered, plant-loving nutrients. Aside from stimulating healthy root development, the addition of rich and earthy compost also improves soil texture, ventilation, and water retention.
