The talented Paris-based designers, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are brothers and have been working together for about fifteen years bonded by diligence and challenged by their distinct personalities. Their studio is based in Paris with a team of six. Their work ranges from the design of small objects as jewellery to spatial arrangements and architecture, craftsmanship to industrial scale, as well as drawings, videos and photography.
The collaboration between the Bouroullec brothers and Vitra began with the office furniture system Joyn, which was developed between 2000 and 2002 and continues to be expanded and refined. Along with Jasper Morrison, Hella Jongerius, and Antonio Citterio, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have made major contributions to the steadily growing Vitra Home Collection. Let’s take a look at some of the most eye-catching pieces in their collection.
Alcove Highback Work
The fundamental idea behind the Alcove product family – providing places of shelter and seclusion – also applies to Alcove Highback Work: the sofa shields users both visually and acoustically from the surrounding environment, forming a space for withdrawal. With its integrated tablet desk, storage box and cable inlet, Alcove Highback Work is a sofa version that offers a flexible and private workspace in the open-plan office for individual tasks requiring concentration.
Corniches by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec can function as a practical storage ledge or decorative wall installation. For instance, they can be used as a key rack beside the front door, a spot to put everything we need to have at our fingertips in the bathroom, or a pedestal for a small collection of objects. Corniches are made from high-quality plastic in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours.
Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, 2008
Designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the Softshell Chair mounted on a height-adjustable five-star swivel base with castors is ideal for studio offices. Its contours and quality materials give it an inviting appeal, while the soft upholstery guarantees superb comfort.
Belleville Armchair Wood
Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, 2015
The contrasting materials of the moulded plywood veneer seat shell and slender black plastic frame constitute a characteristic feature of the Belleville Armchair. Its elegant armrests are an integral part of the curved structural frame and offer excellent comfort. The Belleville Armchair is also available with a plastic seat shell or with a cover in leather or fabric.
L’Oiseau, an avian figure of archaic simplicity, is reminiscent of the simple artefacts of Nordic folk art and attractively enriches contemporary interiors. Previously produced in wood or ceramic, L’Oiseau is now also available as a limited edition of 500 numbered pieces in Carrara marble. The heavy, veined white stone lends the decorative object a refined yet fresh character.
Slow Chair & Ottoman
The comfort of the expansive Slow Chair by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec can be enjoyed in full by pairing it with the matching Ottoman. Both possess a lightweight and elegant design thanks to their translucent knit sling cover and graceful contours. The Slow Chair and Ottoman are available in a selection of colours.
Standard Tyde tables consist of T-legs with height-adjustable columns, frame elements, table tops in a variety of surface materials, and a fleece cable tray to conceal the technical equipment and dampen the sound of the motorised height-adjustment mechanism. Thanks to the solid steel frame and die-cast feet, the tables are extraordinarily sturdy even without a cross brace.
As the Bouroullec’s very first piece for Vitra, the office furniture system Joyn responds to current trends in workplace culture by effectively combining manifold spatial functions on a single level: the Platform. The modular structure of the Joyn Platform spontaneously adapts to changing work requirements and technologies.
